My art involvement with rhinos started during July 2017 whilst visiting Botsalana Game reserve in the North West Province of South Africa : on entering the park we were informed of a rhino cow that was killed during the night for her horn – the calf was on its own, and a team of game capture staff together with SAPs and Game rangers were making efforts to catch the calf and take it to a orphanage facility. Within a km from our camping site, we spotted the calf and met up with the team, who invited us along for the capturing. My very emotional experience was to touch and stroke and come so near to this little fellow and knowing the loss he has suffered as well as our natural loss and the grave future that is playing out in front of us. My concern for nature is embedded in my love to spend as much time as possible in nature during holidays – from this a natural development was to draw with pencils. Our family safari and camping holidays became my visual stories. A process of information gathering followed in the month after this encounter. I read biology, ecology and art history about species being threatened and man’s fascination with the exotic within the natural world. My natural response as an artist was to start with charcoal drawings and I am in the process of adding printmaking to the creative process. This is my story unfolding in lines.
I’m looking forward to your visual stories!
